To Grandmother's House We Go

-When I was 6 years old, I received a Bitty Baby for Christmas. This doll was going to be my pretend child, and I was so excited. I got her from my grandma on Christmas Eve, and I was surprised because I thought Santa was bringing her. I named her Eliza Noel. I was so excited. I went upstairs to my brother's room where our rocking chair was (normally it was in the corner of the living room, but our tree was there instead), and I "nursed" Eliza, and I rocked her. I was so excited. Later, I helped her blow out the candles on our "Happy Birthday Jesus" cake, and I carried her around with me. When we go on car rides, I had a special place for her. Because we didn't have a car seat (and I really doubt my mom would have let me do this), I would place her in this little alcove type thing on the back seat. In the Toyota, the back seat had a pull down separation device, I guess so the back seat passengers had their own room. When it was pulled down, it made the perfect little seat for my doll, and I'm pretty sure that I would strap her in as well. I was convinced that I was going to take care of her and let nothing hurt her.

-It was either my 3rd or 4th birthday. I remember that I received a Troll Baby Doll which would later sit on my bed and would randomly fall to the floor in the middle of the night. I wasn't aware that it was actually my birthday. I thought my birthday was much later so I was confused as to why I was receiving presents.

-On my half birthday when I was 6, I decided that I wanted half a birthday party. My grandma made brownies for my half birthday, and I think she was the only one other than me who celebrated it.

-When I would go over to my grandma's house, she would let me play around in her kitchen. I enjoyed "baking" things even though we just mixed things and never actually baked them. One day, I was experimenting around with flour, water, some other ingredients, and most importantly garlic and green sprinkles. For some reason, my grandma let me bake the thing in the microwave, and very surprisingly, it actually made bread. The bread was green because of the sprinkles which I thought was sooo cool. I thought that the bread was a bit too garlicky, but I liked it. I think I was around 8.

-My grandma would also let me perform science experiments in her driveway. I had received or bought a cool science book, and I wanted to try some of the experiments out. Instead, I ended up mixing red Hawaiian punch, Ajax, CLR, and some other cleaning agents found under the sink. When it came time to dump it, my grandma told me to dump it on her rock which was shaped like a shoe because she didn't want the stuff to kill her grass. I dumped it on that rock, and it dyed the rock red. I think I laughed. In the years to come, the rock would remain stained red until my grandma decided to paint the rock white.

-My grandma also had the coolest basement. She would let us play in her basement, and we were also allowed to write on the basement floor with markers. One time, she had a matress in the basement of her house. One day when I was 7, I was using it as a trampoline when I fell the wrong way and started hurting really bad. My mom freaked out, and we went to urgent care. It turned out that I had pulled a muscle in my back, and my grandma felt so bad. Later, I wasn't allowed to jump on the matress anymore, but we (my brother and I) could play with the matress. I insited that it was mine, and my brother told me that it didn't have my name on it so it wasn't mine. Being the smart child I was (probably 7 or 8), I found a magic marker, and I wrote my name on the matress.

-When I was 4, I played a game called hospital at my grandma's house. I remember lying in her bed pretending that I was in the hospital. I remember that I had a duffle bag with a change of clothes, and I went into her bathroom at one point and changed clothes. That was me getting discharged from the hospital. I think I then went and played outside.

-I was 8 or 9 when I first successfully slept over at my grandma's house. I slept in her spare bedroom, and when it was time to go to sleep, I was so cold. I kept telling my grandma that I was cold, and she kept putting more and more blankets on me. Eventually she also put some coats on top of me as well, and I was still cold. Finally she told me, "I'm sorry but there's nothing left." I eventually fell asleep with all of that stuff on top of me, and I later woke up in the middle of the night. I think that I had to go the bathroom, but I decided to look for my grandma as well. She wasn't in her room, and I was so afraid that some bad man had come to get her. I searched the entire upstairs for her without success, and even though I was so afraid of her basement in the dark, I went down there to see if she was there. I finally went back to the spare bedroom, and I found her in her room. She had apparently gone outside to smoke which is why I couldn't find her.
